Jane Austen’s House Virtual Events
Jane Austen’s House has been offering a wide range of online events and activities to it’s wide audience base, both in the UK and internationally, for the last five years. In that time we have trialled many different offers and have learnt so much about how to deliver engaging and meaningful virtual events that our audiences find enriching and inspiring.
Some of the events we regularly offer are:
- Virtual Tours of Jane Austen’s House
- Virtual education visits
- Virtual book clubs
- Virtual talks
This webpage offers a glimpse into some of the work we have been doing, as well as a highlights reel created by Live to Your Living Room.
Annual Lectures and Drawing Room talks
To date we have created four talks, each delivered by an expert onsite at Jane Austen’s House and made available to an online audience. These have been exceptionally well received and we plan to continue this.
Jane Austen's House 2023 Annual Lecture, filmed onsite in Chawton with acclaimed Austen scholar Professor John Mullan. This film is freely available on YouTube and has had 43,500 views.
Jane Austen’s House Virtual Tour
In 2020, we created an interactive virtual tour of Jane Austen’s House. Although it was created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic it has remained extremely popular, with 5,700 active users in the last 12 months. Users engage with the tour from all over the world, with the UK, USA and Australia seeing the highest use.
In addition, we offer a ticketed guided virtual tour every month, which is delivered on Zoom. Audiences usually range from 30-50 although special themed tours can attract 100+ viewers. This is an example of a Pride and Prejudice themed tour, delivered in January 2025 as part of our Pride and Prejudice Festival to an audience of 115 viewers/households.

Virtual Book Club
JAH offers a monthly virtual book club for 10 months of the year, enabling 50 people to access each session via Zoom, to learn about and discuss each of Jane Austen’s novels as well as her lesser-known works, teenage writings and letters.
The feedback speaks for itself!
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the online book club which the House runs.Ā I appreciate being able to join the sessions so much.
Thank you so much to Rebecca and Megan for an excellent evening – funny, informative and lots of food for thought. Ā As usual, I enjoyed the evening very much.
This is just to say a big ‘thank you’ to Rebecca and Megan for hosting the above event yesterday evening. Ā As ever, it was thoroughly enjoyable and with a lot of humour thrown in! Ā Please do keep offering your Virtual Book Club events – they are wonderful opportunities for Austen fans who, like myself, live too far to visit the Museum regularly to immerse ourselves in Jane Austen’s life and work and meet like-minded people.
Jane Austen’s House Creatives in Residence
In 2020, 2023, 2024 and 2025 we have offered a range of Creatives in Residence positions. These positions are highly sought-after and have writers and artists working in all sorts of mediums – from painting and video art to woodwork and biscuit art.
Many of these commissions have been undertaken virtually and the outcomes are always shared online.
In 2021, Jane Austen's House Creative in Residence Ella Hawkins created an astonishing biscuit artwork, inspired by the Austen family patchwork coverlet. This diamond biscuit is decorated with the historical 'Chawton Leaf' wallpaper pattern, from the Dining Room at Jane Austen's House.
