Welcoming our new creatives in residenceWe are delighted to announce our next pair of Creatives in Residence, Ella Hawkins and Fathima Zahra, who will join us from October - December
After nearly a year of Painting and Poetry we now approach the last leg of our 2021 Creatives in Residence programme by welcoming two exciting new creatives – poet Fathima Zahra and biscuit artist Ella Hawkins – who will join us for a three month digital residency.
Throughout their residency, Zahra and Ella will take inspiration from Jane Austen’s life, works, home and legacy. They will create their own new pieces and also work together to share ideas, stories, imagery and a love of Jane Austen.
We can’t wait to see what they create!
Artist in Residence: Ella Hawkins
Ella is a design historian and artist based in Birmingham. She has a PhD in Shakespeare Studies and specializes in the study of stage and costume design, dress history, and material culture. Her forthcoming book, Shakespeare in Elizabethan Costume: ‘Period Dress’ in Twenty-First-Century Performance, explores how early modern dress has been reimagined in contemporary costume design for Shakespeare. It will be published by Bloomsbury in 2022.
Drawing on her academic work, Ella creates edible art inspired by museum collections, art history, and costumes designed for the stage and screen. She uses a range of decorative techniques to make iced biscuit sets that celebrate the material culture of the past and present.
Poet in Residence: Fathima Zahra
Fathima Zahra is an Indian poet and performer based in Essex. She is a Barbican Young Poet and a Roundhouse Poetry Collective alum. Her work has won the Bridport Prize, Wells Fest Young Poets Prize, and Asia House Poetry Slam. Her poems touch on themes of girlhood, desire, and belonging. Her debut pamphlet ‘Sargam / Swargam’ is out now with ignition press.
Ella and Zahra will create their first works in September, and we’ll share them at the end of the month. In the meantime, we’ll leave you with some of the most beautiful biscuits we’ve ever seen – a delicious taste of Ella’s biscuit art.
