Although this informal portrait of a niece at her own watercolours is undated, Fanny noted in her diary entry of 3 September 1805: ‘Aunt Cassandra took my likeness.’ This may be the picture to which she refers.

This portrait is unsigned and undated. It has been identified as James Austen, the eldest of Jane and Cassandra’s brothers, and is believed to also be the work of Cassandra.
