4. Female Faces

Pencil and ink drawing with watercolour entitled ‘Maria’ by Cassandra. Signed with initials CEA and dated 1808.

This drawing copies an engraving entitled ‘Maria’ by Peltro William Tomkins, after John Russell (1792), which can be seen below. The heartbroken Maria, shown with her dog Silvio and a hallmark flute, is a well-known character from Laurence Sterne’s novel Sentimental Journey (1768).

This drawing is a copy of a plate from an instruction manual entitled Cipriani’s Rudiments of Drawing (1786), shown below. Cassandra’s version has been trimmed on the left, presumably to remove the old man.
