Jane Austen’s House From Home

We have some special news to share! This week we launched Jane Austen's House From Home - a suite of online experiences to transport you to Jane Austen's House from wherever you are in the world!

Jane Austenā€™s novels have been a great source of comfort to many throughout this incredibly difficult year. And even though the Museum is now reopen, we know that many people are still unable to visit – so we wanted to find another way to share the magic of Jane Austen’s House with you.

Now, as winter sets in and restrictions take hold again, we hope to entertain and enlighten you with Jane Austenā€™s House From Home

First up is our brand new 360Ā° virtual tour, transporting you to the picturesque red brick country cottage in the small Hampshire village of Chawton. Follow in Jane Austen’s footsteps as you explore the rooms, visiting objects she knew and loved, including the small, unassuming 12-sided table where she wrote and revised all her novels. Each scene includes detailed information that allows you to learn more, and audio to bring the experience to life.

The beautiful virtual tour was created by Pan 3Sixty Limited working with illustrator James Robinson, whose charming illustrations welcome you to Chawton, and summon up some of Austen’s most beloved characters.

Amongst the other virtual resources on offer are two online exhibitions: Jane Austenā€™s Artful Letters, exploring the importance of letters in Jane Austenā€™s life and work and A Choice Collection of Curiosities, a witty exploration of Jane Austenā€™s Teenage self and writings, through objects in the Museum collection.

There are also a number of virtual events to enjoy, including Austen Wednesdays, our new digital programme of talks and in-conversation events, in which we interview some of our favourite Austen experts!
