By car:

By public transport:

Jane Austen’s House can feel relatively remote, but it’s very possible to get here by public transport!

From Alton:

Alton is a small market town around 1½ miles from Chawton that Jane Austen used to visit regularly for shopping and to visit friends. Her brother Henry had a branch of his bank here, and it is thought that Jane may have based the fictional village of Highbury on Alton.

It is easy to get to Alton by train from London. There is a direct train from Waterloo station leaving approximately every 30 minutes – check National Rail Enquiries for times and prices.

From the train station, you have some options:

Walking:
It is a brisk 30 minute walk from Alton to Chawton, following in Jane Austen’s footsteps – or take your time and enjoy some of the local sights and amenities. Follow our walking instructions…

Buses:
– The 38 bus runs directly from Alton station to Chawton. Alight at Jane Austen’s House. Unfortunately this service does not run frequently so please check timings carefully before you travel.
– The 64 bus does not stop in Chawton but it does run every 30 minutes, and meets the London train. Alight at the stop marked Lincoln Green (approx. 9 minute journey), from which it is a 15 minute walk to the House. Please do not alight at Chawton Roundabout – it is closer to the House but the journey involves crossing the dual carriage way which is not safe.

Taxis:
It is possible to get a taxi from Alton station, but it is advisable to book in advance. There is no taxi rank and Uber is not available. A taxi from Alton to Chawton is around an 8 minute journey and will cost around £10. Wilson Taxis are based at the station.

From Winchester:

If you wish to travel to Chawton from Winchester, we advise catching the 64 bus to Alton. Alight at the stop marked Lincoln Green (approx. 45 minute journey), from which it is a 15 minute walk to the House. Please do not alight at Chawton Roundabout – it is closer to the House but the journey involves crossing the dual carriage way which is not safe.

It is possible to get a taxi from Winchester, but it is advisable to book in advance; it around a 30 minute journey and will cost around £40. There are lots of taxi companies in Winchester, including Winchester Station Taxis.

From Petersfield:

If you wish to travel to Chawton from Petersfield, you can catch the 38 bus from Petersfield station which stops directly outside Jane Austen’s House. The journey is approx. 45 minutes. Unfortunately this service does not run frequently so please check timings carefully before you travel.
