Join food historian Julienne Gehrer for a fascinating talk on Martha Lloyd’s Household book, a precious document of recipes used in the Austen household, held in the Museum's collection.

Sunday 19 June
12:00pm — 1:00pm

Julienne Gehrer – author, journalist and food historian – presents a delicious dive into Martha Lloyd’s Household book – a precious object in the Museum’s collection.

Historic Kitchen at Jane Austen's House

Recently published in facsimile for the first time, Martha’s handwritten book of ‘receipts’ reveals some of the foods that Jane Austen and her family would have eaten, drunk and used here at Chawton Cottage. Julienne will tease out family, culinary and literary connections, giving a fascinating perspective on the time and manner in which both Jane and Martha lived, thanks to this extraordinary artefact.

‘Julienne Gehrer’s comprehensive discussion of Martha Lloyd’s friendship with Jane Austen, her relationship with the Austen family, and her late-life marriage to Sir Francis Austen, Jane’s brother, had me mesmerized.’ – Jane Austen’s World
