Reimagine Resident: paper flowers

Our Reimagine Resident Jessie Beaumont has created a fabulous display of paper flowers for the House, inspired by flowers growing in the garden that were known in Jane Austen's day.

Back in June, self-taught paper artist Jessie Beaumont visited the House and had a tour of the garden with our wonderful gardener, Celia.

Over the summer she painstakingly created a bouquet of flowers in her East London studio, inspired by flowers growing in the garden, all of which were known in Jane Austenā€™s day. The display she created includes her take on foxgloves, peonies, cornflowers, hydrangea, wild roses, poppies, geranium and campanula, which she created using hand-dyed crepe paper on wire stems.

Then, on a beautiful sunny October day, Jessie returned to the House with her creations which she assembled in a white scroll-work vase, filled with chicken wire to help the stems stand upright!

The bouquet is displayed in the Drawing Room, against Jessie’s favourite yellow wallpaper, where it is already attracting a lot of attention from admiring visitors!
