Jane Austen loved reading Samuel Richardson’s letter-based, or epistolary, novels of romance but that didn’t stop her satirising the format in ‘Amelia Webster’. In this extremely economic sequence of incredibly short letters, Austen’s writers lack paper, words and substance. Nevertheless, no less than three weddings result.
