Welcome to Jane Austen's House. It was in this inspiring Hampshire cottage that Jane Austen's genius flourished and where she wrote, revised and had published all six of her globally beloved novels. Purchase a ticket and enjoy unlimited visits for a whole year!

Jane Austen’s House is a cherished museum in Chawton, Hampshire, where the beloved author lived for the last eight years of her life.Ā  It houses an unparalleled collection of Austen treasures. Highlights include Jane’s jewellery, letters, first editions of her novels and the table at which she wrote her much loved novels. Visitors can step back in time to 1816 and follow in Jane’s footsteps as they explore the rooms where she lived and wrote. A series of temporary exhibitions explore Regency life and Jane Austen’s works.Ā  The pretty garden is a perfect place to relax after your visit and of course, you’ll want to visit our Gift Shop which stocks a unique range of gifts and books.Ā Ā We can’t wait to welcome you!

Please pre-book admission tickets, even if you are an annual pass holder.Ā  Due to the small size of our rooms, we limit capacity to 12 visitors entering the House every 20 minutes. Once you are on site you can stay as long as you like until closing time. To guarantee entry we strongly recommend pre-booking your visit to Jane Austen’s House.

Please see below for our opening times.Ā  Opening hours are 10am – 5pm with last admission at 4pm. There are days when we may need to amend these opening times.

Please note: we expect to be very busy in 2025 as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth.Ā  We strongly recommend pre-booking tickets to ensure our visitors have the best possible experience during this celebratory year.Ā  Save money when you pre-book your tickets online!Ā 

Wednesday 1st October to Sunday 14th December: Open Wednesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.Ā  Please see below for exceptions to these times.

Monday 15th to Sunday 21st December: Open 7 days – to celebrate Jane’s birthday!

Monday 22nd to Friday 26th December: House Closed

Saturday 27th to Tuesday 30th December: House Open

Wednesday 31st December – Wednesday 7th January: House Closed

Exhibitions

All exhibitions are free with House entry!

Jane Austen and the Art of WritingĀ is a permanent exhibition which explores Austen’s creative writing process, features objects that directly inspired her writing and displays a rare collection of first editions of all six of her novels, on display together for the first time at the house where she wrote them.

Austenmania! celebrates the 30th anniversary of the iconic Austen adaptations of 1995, from the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice to Clueless, featuring production shots, original cinema posters and press cuttings as well as two original Pride and Prejudice transmission scripts and handwritten production notes. Runs throughout 2025.

The Regency Wardrobe is a beautiful and intricate collection of fine art wardrobe pieces created from paper and thread by artist Stephanie Smart, on display throughout the House from September 2025 to February 2026.

The Poetry Bookcase This specially-created installation brings together poems that Jane Austen and her family knew and loved. The poetry theme continues around the House with poems by the Austen family and a range of contemporary poets for you to discover, and a House Tour in Rhyme for children and families to enjoy! Runs until 16 November 2025.Ā

šŸ• Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the garden, and must be kept on a lead at all times. Assistance dogs only are allowed in the House.

Information for Tour Guides

Please note: Tour guides also require tickets for entry. Tickets are automatically annual passes allowing guides to revisit the House multiple times throughout the year. (Annual pass tickets must be pre-booked. A valid annual pass must be provided on return visits. Excludes special event days.)

Tour guides are not permitted to conduct guided tours at Jane Austen’s House. If a party have requested a guided tour, please contact us and we will be happy to arrange a tour with our expert in-house guides.

Accessibility

Jane Austen’s House is a historic property with low doorways and uneven surfaces underfoot. The ground floor and outbuildings are fully accessible and we have an accessible toilet with baby changing facilities. Unfortunately, the upstairs of the main house is currently only accessible by climbing a historic wooden staircase although the upstairs can now be viewed virtually via our 360° virtual tour.

Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the House.
