āYes, yes, we will have a Pianoforte, as good a one as can be got for 30 Guineas ā & I will practise country dances, that we may have some amusement for our nephews & neices, when we have the pleasure of their company.āĀ
Jane Austen, 28 December 1808Ā Ā
Throughout our Pride and Prejudice Festival, we will welcome competent pianists who wish to practice on our 1813 Clementi square piano for an hour each morning ā just as Jane Austen used to do.Ā
The first hour of the day will be devoted to piano practice in the Drawing Room. The House will be open to visitors, so if you wish to play, please be prepared for an appreciative audience!Ā Ā
We will provide a selection of sheet music from the period, as well as printed copies of Jane Austenās handwritten music books, so you can practice the songs that Jane herself played in this very room, should you wish to. We are also very happy for you to play from your own repertoire, although we do ask that you choose appropriate music to play.Ā
Find out more about our Clementi square piano.

Join us on Pride and Prejudice Day, our annual celebration of the novel’s publication, and take a virtual deep-dive into the extraordinary journey of Jane Austenās most beloved novel, from first draft to publication and beyond.
This talk follows the extraordinary journey of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austenās most beloved novel, from first draft to publication and on through some of its most important and influential editions and incarnations.Ā
It draws on a wealth of gloriousāÆPride and PrejudiceāÆmaterial from the museum collection, from a rare first edition through to the first American edition, Hugh Thomsonās gorgeously illustrated āPeacock editionā, and on to the first paperback edition in the 1930s. It also dips into adaptations of the novel, from the first theatrical adaptations to the first film released in 1940, and BBC TV adaptations from 1938 ā 1995.Ā Ā
Along the way weāll explore reactions to the novel through the ages, beginning with a letter Jane Austen wrote to her sister on the novelās first publication, and take a look at the novelās critical reception and legacy.Ā
