Mr Darcy’s shirt
We’re delighted the BBC is joining in the Pride and Prejudice Day fun too!
Back in 2021, Jane Austen’s House displayed the ‘wet shirt’ worn by Colin Firth in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, as part of our exhibition Jane Austen Undressed.
The shirt is iconic, and the scene in which it was worn was once voted the most memorable moment in British TV drama history.
Head of BBC History, Robert Seatter says: “The BBC is delighted to be supporting this celebration of the much-loved Pride and Prejudice with an open invitation to revel in Andrew Davies’ enduringly popular TV adaptation. You can also find that famous wet shirt on our BBC Objects Collection it’s that significant to the story of the BBC!”
Listen to BBC Radio 4’s Property of the BBC programme to hear about the importance of the shirt!
