The Mystery Pitch
Austen dedicated her playlet ‘The Mystery’ to her father with the words. ‘I humbly solicit your Patronage to the following Comedy, which tho’ an unfinished one, is I flatter myself as complete a Mystery as any of its kind.’ Just how complete soon becomes obvious – the whispering cast of characters seem to understand each other but how, and why, and what are they talking about?
