Back by popular demand! In 2024 our Virtual Book Club will run monthly from February – November, covering all of Jane Austen’s novels as well as her teenage works and letters. Bring your thoughts, ideas and observations… bring tea and quotes and questions… expect stimulating discussion and debate!
Join us for our Virtual Book Club – a lively online space in which we discuss all things Jane Austen!
Our last session of the year will focus on Jane Austen’s Letters,Ā collected and edited by Deirdre Le Faye. This unique collection brings together all of Jane Austen’s known surviving letters, offering an unparalleled and irresistible insight into Jane’s life from 1796, when she was 20 years old, to May 1817, just weeks before her death at the age of 41.
The bulk of the letters are to Jane’s beloved sister Cassandra, with others written to family and friends, as well as the odd business letter. Through her letters, we can glimpse Jane Austen herself – her voice ungilded by fiction.Ā They are intimate and gossipy, observant and informative, bringing alive her family and friends, her surroundings and contemporary events.
We’re not expecting you to have read them all! We’ll choose a couple of letters to get us started and share them in advance, but we’re also keen to hear about the letters that you loved reading as you dip into this glorious collection.
As always, weāll get the ball rolling with questions, ideas and provocations about the texts and then itās over to you ā as a group weāll share thoughts, theories, favourites and best-bits.
Grab a cup of tea and join us for an hour of blissful discussion with fellow Jane Austen fans around the world!

If you canāt visit in person, enjoy a virtual tour of the exhibition objects from the comfort of your own home!Ā
Jane Austen and the Art of Writing celebrates Jane Austen as a ground-breaking and ambitious writer in the very house where she created her six beloved novels ā directly linking Jane Austenās creative process with the domestic space from which it came.Ā
This virtual event will be led by the exhibition curator, who will introduce objects from the Houseās extraordinary collection that help to celebrate Jane Austenās creative genius and show how seriously she took her craft ā from her earliest teenage writings to her adult novels. It will also cover objects that inspired her, books she read, literary techniques she pioneered, and her dealings with her publishers.Ā Ā

Join us for a captivating talk by award-winning costume designer Dinah Collin, in conversation with costume historian Keith Lodwick.
In the beautiful and intimate surroundings of the Drawing Room at Jane Austenās House, where Jane herself read aloud from her first published copy of Pride and Prejudice in 1813, we will host a small audience to enjoy this exclusive event as the ultimate winter afternoon treat!
Dinah Collin is perhaps best-known for creating the beautiful and memorable costumes worn in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. Her costumes are acclaimed as one of the many reasons why the adaptation was so successful and is still so beloved by fans thirty years after it first aired.
In this informal conversation, film costume curator and historian Keith Lodwick will interview Dinah about how the adaptation came into being, her design process and inspirations, and how the costumes helped shape the production.
This event will be filmed for an online audience (watch this space for details!), but a small number of tickets are also available for the live event! As our live audience you will enjoy special access, you’ll be invited to ask questions, and you’ll enjoy the unique atmosphere of Jane Austen’s House out of normal opening hours.
After the talk, join us for tea in the Historic Kitchen.

Pride and PrejudiceāÆwas published on 28 January 1813. Jane received her author copies the day before and that very evening she and her mother read half of the first volume to their neighbour, Miss Benn, without letting on that Jane was the author. Jane described the event in a letter to Cassandra:Ā Ā
āI beleive it passed with her unsuspected.āShe was amused, poor soul! that she cd not help you know, with two such people to lead the wayā
For this very special event, join us as we re-enact the first ever reading aloud of Pride and Prejudice over 200 years ago, in the Drawing Room of Jane Austenās House.Ā Ā
As part of a small and exclusive audience, weāll enjoy a welcome from the Museum Director Lizzie Dunford before we settle down for a lively reading by fantastic actors Hollie Hales and Adam Cunis ā bringing Jane Austenās beloved story to life. Ā Ā
We wonāt get through quite as much as Jane and her mother ā but weāll enjoy the first six chapters of Pride and Prejudice, taking us from Mr Bingleyās first arrival at Netherfield to Mr Darcyās snub of Elizabeth at the Meryton assembly, and on to the evening party at Sir William Lucasās where Darcy notices Elizabethās fine eyes with admiration, and Miss Bingley experiences a twinge of jealousyā¦Ā
As a master of dialogue, Jane Austenās works are best enjoyed out loud, and this delightful performance will bring the characters alive in the very room in which Jane first gave voice to them herself.Ā
After the reading, weāll enjoy a warming glass of mulled wine or apple juice in the Historic Kitchen and toast our inimitable and extraordinary authoress.Ā Ā

Take a deep-dive into the extraordinary journey of Jane Austenās most beloved novel, from first draft to publication and beyond.
This talk follows the extraordinary journey ofāÆPride and Prejudice, Jane Austenās most beloved novel, from first draft to publication and on through some of its most important and influential editions and incarnations.Ā
It draws on a wealth of gloriousāÆPride and PrejudiceāÆmaterial from the museum collection, from a rare first edition through to the first American edition, Hugh Thomsonās gorgeously illustrated āPeacock editionā, and on to the first paperback edition in the 1930s. It also dips into adaptations of the novel, from the first theatrical adaptations to the first film released in 1940, and BBC TV adaptations from 1938 ā 1995.Ā Ā
Along the way weāll explore reactions to the novel through the ages, beginning with a letter Jane Austen wrote to her sister on the novelās first publication, and take a look at the novelās critical reception and legacy.Ā

Join us for a very special musical evening in the Drawing Room of Jane Austenās House. As part of a small audience, enjoy an exquisite performance as Jane Austenās beloved novel Pride and Prejudice is brought to life through an instantly-recognisable musical score.Ā
Inspired by the BBCās beloved 1995 TV adaption of Pride and Prejudice, this performance brings the novel to life with music adapted by Carl Davis from his original BBC score, and a spoken narration written by acclaimed novelist Gill Hornby.Ā Ā
Performance by Susan Rutherford (narrator), Leora Cohen (violin) and Paul Wingfield (piano).Ā
This event is a tribute to the film/TV composer Carl Davis, who sadly died on 3 August 2023, and is generously sponsored by Trinity College, Cambridge.Ā Ā
